Bharatanatyam

Revanta started learning Indian classical dance when he was age five. Trained in Bharatanatyam under Guru Smt. Maheshwari Nagarajan among others at the Darpana Academy of performing arts, Revanta has perfected his technique under the mentorship of his grandmother, legendary dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and is strongly influenced by his mother, renowned Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer, Mallika Sarabhai. Since the age of 14, Revanta started experimenting with choreography, combining elements of classical dance with innovative contemporary choreography.

Revanta’s recent work includes new Bharatanatyam pieces that adhere strictly to the classical dance form while exploring contemporary subject matter. Two new pieces, Varman: Oh, enn daivamme! and Padam: Maanvizhi Kannavale premiered at Akademi’s Daredevas at the Waterman’s Centre in London in 2011.

Varnam – Oh Enn Daivamme

The Varnam is the centre piece of the Bharatanatyam repertoire. It combines nritta, the pure dance aspect of the style with intricate rhythmic patterns, bhava, the interpretative or emotive aspect, and complex musical patterns. The Varnam is always the dancer’s plea to a deity, in this case Nataraja, the Lord of Dance. This Varnam is that of the 21st century devotee, a young man torn by varied distractions and directions, in an alien land amongst strangers, yet trying to fulfil his devotion to the dance. Padam – Maanvizhi Kannavale

A Padam is a showcase for a dancer’s emotive skills and his imagination in communicating the thoughts behind the lyrics of a song, usually a love song. This Padam too has been created for Revanta by Mallika Sarabhai and is set in the times of virtual communications and career motivated women, looking at the difficulties of a long-distance relationship.
